The marriage of Petrus de Kuyper and Anna Custers in 1695 marked the official beginning of the De Kuyper family business. They started a cooperage in Horst, the Netherlands, where Petrus de Kuyper manufactured wooden barrels to transport gin. The current manager Remy de Kuyper is now the 11th generation and continues the family business.
In 1995, de Kuyper took over Erven Warnink BV in Middelharnis. For the production of advocaat and liqueurs, de Kuyper needed steam. Since 2001 Royal De Kuyper has been working with Clayton steam for various processes in their production such as cooking processes, pasteurization and sterilization. This is only done during the day, at night no steam is used and then the Clayton installation goes into cold shutdown, so there is no unnecessary energy consumption compared to a classical steam boiler.

Due to continued growth, de Kuyper decided to purchase the latest type of steam generator from Clayton in 2022. This decision was made both to meet the increased demand for steam and to go green. The goal was to reduce gas, water and electricity consumption while minimizing flue gas emissions. De Kuyper invested in a SEOG-100-1-LN-FGR steam generator. It is equipped with an economizer, a low-emission burner and an option for flue gas recirculation. A combustion efficiency of 96% was measured by the independent agency SCIOS and, in addition, NOx values are low due to flue gas recirculation. The steam plant has an output of 1000 kW and produces about 1500 kg of steam per hour at 7 bar, depending on conditions. The burner is fully modulating with a 1:8 control, which is very important for De Kuyper because production is very variable.

De Kuyper is very satisfied with this new investment and received favorable advice for their grant application. The efficiency has increased, the machine operates very quietly and in addition, the remote connection module is conveniently used. This allows employees to turn the steam plant on and off remotely and to monitor the process 24/7.
Clayton steam generators are characterized by their compactness and light weight. Because the efficient countercurrent principle is used for the heat exchanger and the water is contained in a long steel tube in the form of a spiral, steam explosion is not possible.

Since its founding, De Kuyper Royal Distillers has grown to become a global supplier of cocktail liqueurs with handcrafted distillates and extracts and natural botanicals. The company received the international award “Liqueur Producer of the Year” for the fourth year in a row. De Kuyper also uses a structured sustainability management policy, with the main goal of becoming a climate-neutral company. The new Clayton steam generator brings De Kuyper one step closer to that goal.
