Clayton Steam generator vs a Quick steam generator and Steam boiler

Steam is essential in many industrial processes. But the way you generate that steam makes a big difference. While traditional steam boilers are often slow, bulky and maintenance-heavy, the Clayton steam generator offers a modern, compact and efficient alternative. In this comparison, we explain why more and more companies are switching to a Clayton solution.

FeatureQuick Steam GeneratorSteam BoilerClayton Steam Generator
Steam QualityWet steam. Low quality.Moisture carryover increases during sudden demand.Steam is 99.5% dry saturated, best available quality.
Quick Start UpShort heat-up but high losses due to purging.Up to 60 min startup time due to large water mass.Startup within 5 min. Low heat requirement.
Rapid ResponseRapid but fluctuating pressures.Lag limits flexibility.Rapid adjustments without losing stability.
SafetyNo info available.Risk of steam explosion. No explosions ever due to no large water storage.
Scale ControlRapid scale build-up.Scale forms easily, affects performance.Easy detection, early corrective action.
Water Level SafeguardsLimited/unreliable safeguards.Loss of water level can cause catastrophic failures. No discernable water level, no controls needed.
Burner OperationFrequent switching causes high fuel use.Constant switching, high energy waste.Fully modulating, off when no demand.
MaintenanceHigh wear and premature corrosion.Corrosion repairs expensive.Designed for low maintenance.
Steam ReserveNo steam reserve.Limited reserve (~2 min).Reliable pressure control, no issues.
Automatic OperationNeeds trained operators.Supervision required.Fully automatic, minimal human intervention.
Running CostsNo info available.High running costs due to inefficiency.High efficiency and lower running costs.
Space and WeightLow space and weight.Three times larger, up to 7x heavier.Compact size, low installation costs.
Blowdown LossesNo blowdown, contaminants in steam.Regular blowdown from entire water volume.High tolerance, minimal blowdown.

Which fuels can be used with the generator?

Arrow iconFAQ

Clayton steam generators can be configured to operate on a wide variety of fuels, depending on availability and customer preference. Standard options include:

  • Natural gas
  • Light fuel oil (diesel)
  • Heavy fuel oil
  • Propane / LPG
  • Biofuels

In addition, Clayton offers dual-fuel burners, allowing automatic switching between gas and oil for maximum flexibility and security of supply. All Clayton burners can be hydrogen-ready and can operate on all common gaseous and liquid fuels. This makes the system highly adaptable for both today’s requirements and future energy transition projects.

To meet stringent environmental standards, Clayton can also supply burners with FGR (Flue Gas Recirculation), enabling very low NOx emissions while maintaining high efficiency.

With a fully modulating burner (turndown ratio up to 1:8), efficient operation is guaranteed across the full load range, no matter which fuel is used.
