A 6MW boiler for Molto, classified as if it were a small one

At JMolto LT, they have been working in the textile industry for more than 40 years, consistently investing in technology every time they renew their equipment. Not as a luxury, but as a way to remain competitive and improve in key areas such as quality, competitiveness, productivity and environmental performance.

More than 35 years ago, Molto installed four Clayton boilers—two 3MW units and two 5MW units—to support its production. They are still there. Still running.

Now it was time to take the next step: renew the equipment and increase capacity. But a very common industrial challenge emerged: space. The facilities are already built, with all the constraints that entails.

This is where Spain’s Pressure Equipment Regulations (BOE-A-2021-16407) come into play. The regulations classify boilers as Class 1 or Class 2 according to the product p × V: maximum pressure multiplied by water volume. A large conventional boiler will almost always fall into Class 2 because of its water volume. Class 2 means having to build a boiler room with concrete walls, prepare an engineering project, employ a certified operator... construction work, time, money and space.

That was the challenge we took on together with our partner Aguilar & Pineda. The solution we proposed convinced the customer from the outset, and the new 6MW boiler is now being prepared for delivery shortly. Water content, including the economiser: 2,183 litres. Maximum pressure: 10 barg. p × V = 21,830, well below the 50,000 threshold between Class 1 and Class 2.

The result: more power, without civil works or an additional engineering project. And it is not just paperwork they avoid—the possibility of a steam explosion is eliminated as well. Compliance with regulations and increased safety, all in one move.

35 years is a long time. Here’s to another 35.
